Barcelona is keeping its commitment to promoting science vocations among young people through these day events, which the City Council is organising in collaboration with the Barcelona East School of Engineering (EEBE) at the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya – BarcelonaTech (UPC).

 STEAM Anella

The first of the four day events was held at the Palau Sant Jordi, with over 2,100 2nd- and 3rd-year compulsory secondary-education (ESO) students taking part, from 28 institutes from Barcelona, the metropolitan Area and Girona.

Each group-class in Anella STEAM enjoyed activities run by EEBE students as well as a show resulting from collaboration between lecturers at the UPC and artists such as the Equidart dance company and the Mobby Dixie jazz band.

The available activities included workshops such as Perception, which involved students using special glasses to experience how alcohol changes your perception of your surroundings and the danger that this entails while driving; Rockets, where students investigated the flight of a rocket propelled by air; and Lab, where students discovered the hidden materials behind several technological applications, and were even able to perform spherification.

What’s more, a development not seen in previous STEAM Anella sessions, was the Pythagoras workshop, for students to experiment with and understand Pythagoras’ theorem using paper, scissors and scales; an escape room set in the centenary of Einstein’s visit to Barcelona, explaining the role played by women scientists in the development and application of the theory of relativity.
